The regulations and statutes that seek to create a more equitable balance for buyers in the marketplace and prevent sellers from using dishonest tactics. Both state and federal laws play a role in regulating consumer law. These laws range from prohibiting false advertising and imposing product safety measures to regulating debt collection practices and protecting consumers’ identifying information.

Helps to resolve disputes between New Mexico consumers and businesses of $25,000 or less.
Consumer Credit Counseling Services
Nonprofit organization offering free credit counseling. Provides professional financial guidance,foreclosure prevention, credit counseling, debt management solutions, housing counseling assistance, bankruptcy counseling and education services, and educational programs by phone, Internet, and in-person sessions.
Law Access New Mexico
Provides free civil legal advice and referrals via telephone and fax only for low-income New Mexicans. Including but not limited to family law, landlord/tenant, public housing, public benefits, consumer law, child guardianship. Also hosts free workshops. They do not provide ongoing legal representation or go to court.Open 8:45-3:45 weekdays. Se habla español; translators available for other languages.
National Legal Center
National law firm (based out of state with a local Albuquerque representative) specializing in public interest law, specifically debt resolution and bankruptcy alternatives.
New Mexico Attorney General Consumer Protection Division
Consumer Protection Division tracks and monitors complaints against businesses operating in New Mexico; investigates suspicious business activities, and offers complaint resolution services to dissatisfied consumers. Walk-in hours are 10-3 M-F and by appointment.
New Mexico Legal Aid
Providing free legal services to low-income residents of Bernalillo County. Will provide services in the areas of child support, AFDC(only in domestic violence related cases), food stamps, Medicaid, state disability and SSI unemployment benefits, Section8 housing,landlord/tenant, uncontested divorces, and domestic matters where violence or custodial interference has occurred.Services not provided for criminal,DWI, personal injury, worker’s comp, foreclosures, or paternity.
New Mexico Public Regulation Commission
State Utility Commissions like the PRC regulate services and rates for gas, electricity and telephones as well as other services within NM; they also seek to resolve disputes and complaints with licensed New Mexico Insurance Companies and certain transportation agencies/utilities.
State Bar Association of New Mexico
Free general information publications on various areas of law, mailed free of charge. Also hosts free monthly workshops on consumer debt, estate planning/probate, landlord/tenant,and elder law issues (no consultations in workshops).

Tax Help New Mexico
Tax Help New Mexico is a free service for people whose household income is $57,000 or less or those who are 65 years or older. Tax Help volunteers are certified by the IRS and are trained to help taxpayers identify tax credits for which they're entitled to. Tax Help is operated in partnership between CNM and the United Way of Central New Mexico.
